Autumn
October 9, 2008
I was reading up on Civil Liberties and ready to begin the next chapter in my American government book, and I looked to the left as I heard the wind begin stirring. To the left is the slider in the dining room, which has the screen door as its only defense against the elements today. The rustling leaves of Autumn called to me, filling the room with only one desire…to be out among the happenings and color.
Leaving my book on the coffee table and walking towards the door, I stop…feeling naked and empty handed. My mind freezes, what am I forgetting?? Oh, yes, my eyes land upon the Nikon sitting quietly on the counter. And then, my gaze falls lower, to the light cube bag, and the tripod “toe” sticking out from the partially unzipped corner. Usually a meanderer, the tripod is quite often a hinderance, but, why not? I bring it along with me outside.
The sun is almost fully high, and the wind is singing through the trees, at velocities we will not appreciate in a few more weeks. Senses are all overcome at once when stepping out into the day. Magnificent colors are bursting forth all around. Trees in yellow, orange, red, varying shades of green, some sprouting rainbows upon their branches. A fervent rain of colors sail upon the wind, dancing and twisting, their smells not yet that of death, but of the last whispers of glory, before falling. Silently, I stand surrounded by the dance, watching a frolicking whirlwind, joyfully whisking leaves over its head.
Standing, watching, feeling the warm breeze and the soft hand of the sun upon my skin, I click the shutter. Focusing, waiting for just the right moment, the right setting, wanting to capture the magic in a picture, share the feelings of the day…and alas, I was not successful…today.
There is still more of Autumn to come, I am sure.
